Simple, wholesome baking from our family kitchen
There’s something special about baking at home, especially when little hands are involved. These hot cross buns have become a favourite in our home, soft, gently spiced, and filled with simple ingredients we trust.
It’s not just about the end result, but the process, the mixing, the kneading, the waiting, and the joy of sharing something warm from the oven together.
Hot Cross Buns
๐งพ Ingredients
- 6 cups bread flour
- ½ cup caster sugar
- 3 tsp cinnamon
- 3 tsp allspice
- 3 tsp yeast
- Pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp oil
- 600 ml hot water
- 1 cup dried fruit
Cross
- ½ cup flour
- 5 tbsp water
Glaze
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
- 1 tbsp hot water
๐ฉ๐ณ Method
Begin by combining the flour, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, yeast, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Slowly add the oil and hot water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Fold through the dried fruit, then turn the dough out onto a bench and knead for around 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a bowl, cover, and allow it to rest for 1 hour, giving it time to rise and develop.
Once ready, divide the dough and roll into individual buns. Place them onto a lined tray, leaving a little space between each one. Cover and let them rest for a further 30 minutes.
To make the crosses, mix the flour and water into a paste and pipe over the buns.
Bake at 180°C for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
While still warm, brush over a simple glaze made from caster sugar and hot water to give them a soft, gentle shine.
